MEDICAL MARIJUANA STATES

Medical marijuana laws vary from state to state. Advocates of using weed in the treatment of certain medical conditions have seen an advancement over the past few years as more and more states begin to enact medical marijuana laws. To date, 15 states have enacted medical cannabis laws.

Medical Marijuana State List

There are 13 states that have enacted laws, legalizing medical marijuana. These include:

  • Alaska, passed in 1998; legal possession limit is 1 oz (6 plants: 3 immature, 3 mature)
  • California, passes in 1996; legal possession limit is 8 oz (18 plants: 6 mature, 12 immature)
  • Colorado, passed in 2000; legal possession limit is 2 oz (6 plants: 3 mature, 3 immature)
  • Hawaii, passed in 2000; legal possession limit is 3 oz (7 plants: 3 mature, 4 immature)
  • Maine, passed in 1999; legal possession limit is 1.25 oz (6 plants: 3 mature, 3 immature)
  • Michigan, passed in 2008; legal possession limit is 2.5 oz (12 plants)
  • Montana, passed in 2004; legal possession limit is 1 oz (6 plants)
  • Nevada, passed in 2000; legal possession limit is 1 oz (7 plant; 3 mature, 4 immature)
  • New Mexico, passed in 2007; legal possession limit is 6 oz (16 plants: 4 mature, 12 immature)
  • Oregon, passed in 1998; legal possession limit is 24 oz (24 plants: 6 mature, 18 immature)
  • Rhode Island, passed in 2006; possession limit 2.5 oz (12 plants)
  • Vermont, passed in 2004; possession limit is 2 oz (9 plants: 2 mature, 7 immature)
  • Washington, passed in 1998; possession limit is 24 oz (15 pants)

In addition, two states have enacted laws that are favorable towards marijuana but have not legalized it use. These include:

  • Arizona, passed in 1996; allows physicians to prescribe marijuana
  • Maryland, passed in 2003; patients are protected against being arrested for possession of marijuana, although they may still be fined
